Fused at their side, dense masses of their golden spines intertwine.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe golden barrel cactus - a perfect green globe with masses of golden spines. \u003cem\u003eEchinocactus grusonii \u003c\/em\u003eis endemic to east-central Mexico, where it grows on sunny slopes in rich volcanic rock that allows for water to quickly drain away. \u003cem\u003eE. grusonii\u003c\/em\u003e grow large and globose, usually solitary but new growth can emerge from the base of the stem. Eventually these spheres can reach over a metre in height, but with maturity the shape of the stem becomes more elongated and barrel-like. Its pale green surface is heavily ribbed, with sharp, long yellow spines, some which are hooked at the tip.
