Melocactus matanzanus

Growing to tem centimeters in diameter, this Cuban cactus forms a red-brown patch of bristles at its top from which flowers will emerge, later forming pale pink, chili-pepper-like seed pods. This “Cephalium” can eventually grow as tall as the cactus itself in an older plant.

Watering

Water when soil is dry 100%. Water lightly (if at all) during winter months.

Light requirements

Full sun. 

Feed

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March - November.

Repotting

It can stay in the same pot for a number of years as it is such a slow growing plant. If it does ever become too small for the pot it is in, repot into one size up and use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage such as perlite, pumice or grit.
