Cephalotus follicularis

Cephalotus follicularis, the Albany pitcher plant, is the only species within its genus. Endemic to peaty swamps within the southwestern corner of Western Australia, this pitcher plant grows two types of leaf; non carnivorous pointed leaves in spring, and a carnivorous summer leaves in the form of small pitchers. The leaves and pitchers emerge in bright green and deep red tones, while the trap entrance glistens in a blood red colour. Sensitive to overheating, mild temperatures are preferred for this carnivore.

Watering

Place on a tray or saucer with water, sitting in at least several centimetres of water at all times. Let the plant dry out just a little in between waterings. Use rainwater or soft water only.

Light requirements

Full sun or partial shade. Avoid harsh afternoon rays. Larger leaves and traps form in shadier spots, while deep red colour develops in sunshine.

Feed

No need for fertiliser as the traps will attract insects to digest for nutrients.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years using a carnivorous plant compost, mixed with sand, to provide the plant with a little room to grow.

Pot size / height
