Citrus x meyeri
Citrus plants today are mostly hybrids, and all originate from three plants native to South and East Asia, pomelo, citron, and mandarin. Citrus x meyeri, the Meyer lemon, is a cross between a citron and a mandarin/pomelo, able to reach heights of no more than 3 metres tall. Amongst spiny branches grow deep green ovate leaves, with fragrant white flowers forming during spring and summer which are followed by the distinct sweet round yellow-orange fruit once the plant is mature enough.
Citrus plants are tender and not frost hardy, so they should be brought indoors for the colder winter months. Their ideal growing conditions are in a greenhouse as they prefer slightly cool temperatures during the winter while still sheltered from the frost, alongside warmth and high humidity during the summer. Citrus plants tend to produce more fruit than they can support, so it's best to trim some fruit back in more juvenile specimens.
Watering
During the spring and summer months water frequently, keeping the soil moist, mist in the mornings to increase humidity. When brought indoors for the winter months, allow for the top few centimetres of soil to dry to the touch before watering. To keep up humidity indoors over the winter months, place the plant on a tray of pebbles with some water.
Light requirements
Full sun, in a slightly sheltered spot. Ideally south-facing, or west-facing. Protect from harsh summer afternoon sun.
Feed
Use a citrus specific fertiliser frequently during the active growing season of spring/summer. During the autumn/winter months reduce fertiliser use slightly.
Repotting
Repot using a free-draining citrus specific compost, into a container not much larger than the rootball. Size up the container once roots begin to protrude through the drainage holes. In between repotting, refresh the top of the soil with a fresh compost mix during the spring/summer months.
Pot size / height
See available sizes below. Please note that, due to their natural variability, specimens' height may be within 10-20% of the stated height below.
Plant supplied in plastic nursery pot.
