Echinocactus grusonii

The golden barrel cactus - a perfect green globe with masses of golden spines. Echinocactus grusonii is endemic to east-central Mexico, where it grows on sunny slopes in rich volcanic rock that allows for water to quickly drain away. E. grusonii grow large and globose, usually solitary but new growth can emerge from the base of the stem. Eventually these spheres can reach over a metre in height, but with maturity the shape of the stem becomes more elongated and barrel-like. Its pale green surface is heavily ribbed, with sharp, long yellow spines, some which are hooked at the tip. Small yellow flowers emerge from the wooly apex during the growing season once the plant is mature enough.

Watering

Water thoroughly and regularly when soil is 100% dry during the spring/summer months. Refrain from watering during the winter months.

Light requirements

Full sun.

Feed

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March - November.

Repotting

This species can live in the same pot for several years. Repotting may only be necessary once every 2-3 years (or longer), once roots begin to protrude out of the drainage holes. Use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage medium such as perlite, pumice or grit.
