Ferocactus coloratus

Growing at low elevations on rocky hillsides, Ferocactus coloratus is found only between Punta Pricta and Miller's Landing, Baja California, North West Mexico. This solitary cactus grows a round or elongated dark green stem with many prominent ribs. With maturity the bright red long hooked spines form a dense cage, with the stem barely seen underneath. Yellow and red flowers may emerge during the summer months.

Watering

Water thoroughly and regularly when soil is 100% dry during the spring/summer months. Refrain from watering during the winter months.

Light requirements

Full sun.

Feed

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March - November.

Repotting

This species can live in the same pot for several years. Repotting may only be necessary once every 2-3 years (or longer), once roots begin to protrude out of the drainage holes. Use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage medium such as perlite, pumice or grit.
