Obregonia denegrii

Obregonia denegrii is a lone species within its genus, native to Tamaulipas, Mexico. Its solitary stems can grow 13cm wide, with a sunken apex and a rosette of triangular tubercles. Its compact growth and protruding tubercles create a shape closely resembling an artichoke, giving it the common name of ‘Artichoke cactus’. Thin scraggly spines grow in groups of two to four from wooly areoles, but they’re quick to shed. From its wooly crown delicate white blooms emerge during the summer months, with pale pink centres.
