Pinguicula esseriana

Pinguicula, commonly known as butterworts, use sticky, glandular leaves to lure, trap, and digest insects. Unlike other carnivorous plants, which often have a more mechanical trap, Pinguicula simply use their sticky leaves which emerge in a rosette. Pinguicula esseriana forms just a petite rosette, with slightly cupped pale green leaves. Delicate blue flowers emerge on a long thin stalk during the growing season.

Watering

Keep in a shallow tray or saucer filled with water during the spring and summer months. Pinguicula can tolerate lime, so tap water is suitable. Avoid watering the leaves. Reduce watering and allow soil to dry slightly during the dormant winter months, and gradually increase watering in spring once roots begin to grow.

Light requirements

Bright, indirect light. Ideal for a north or east facing window.

Feed

No need for fertiliser as the traps will attract insects to digest for nutrients. If there are no flies where the plant is kept indoors.

Repotting

As Pinguicula form new rosettes over time, these can be divided up and potted separately in spring. Plant in a mix of spaghnum moss and perlite.
