The Fabaceae commonly known as the legumes, is the third largest family of flowering plants. They range in form from small non-woody plants to giant tropical trees. The fruit of the Fabaceae usually form in a pod with a seam, and several species are used as major agricultural crops. A large number of the Fabaceae family form a relationship with bacteria that allows them to extract nitrogen from the air as well as the soil.
